We have heard about underwater restaurants and cafes, houses and inns, but have you ever enjoyed underwater driving? Thanks to awesome engineering ideas and the 4.6-mile Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) this dream is a reality since 1992!

Views

This bridge cost $400 million to build. And it can be viewed as a completely victory of progress over nature. The bridge seems to be so small and so unstable. If to look at its aerial photos it seems to be built right on the water. To drive there is a real pleasure, you will enjoy one of the most spectacular views in the whole world, breathtaking views: enormous expanse of water left, right, and ahead of you and nothing more, just blue sky, water and never ending line of the road … and then a tunnel out of the blue.

The figures are even more impressive than views. This bridge is not only the most expensive project in the history of this place but the biggest and the most large-scale one. The MMMBT includes a four-lane tunnel that is 4,800 feet long, two special man-made islands,15 prefabricated segments each 300 feet long for constructing an underwater tube.  

There are 33 special cameras on the bridge monitoring the traffic flow. You can listen to your favourite radio stations while in tunnel. This feature was made in order for operators to be able to aware people of any accidents in the tunnel.  

Most people think that it is really not necessary and it is about exceptionally extra expenses. But it means that they have never tried one. As a rule, such insurances are rather budget-friendly and anyway it is mush better to have insurance and never use it than not to have it when you need it.

• Bhola Cyclone

It happened in Bangladesh. This devastating cyclone stuck in 1970. The world has never seen a cyclone THAT severe. 38 years later it is still considered to be one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern times. The storm was powerful and long.

Between 300,000 and 500,000 people lost their lives and thousands of people were left homeless. The cyclone ruined everything on its way and this land turned into a complete mess.

• Hurricane Katrina

There were a lot of hurricanes in the USA, but this one was the worst ever. According to the death toll it can’t be named the most powerful one but its financial impact was incomparable. This storm has changed the entire region.

It happened in 2005 and nobody was expecting this small storm to grew into a Category 5 hurricane. New Orlean was dying from really severe flooding.

This storm took lives of 1,500 people in four states, thousands of houses were either destroyed or simply damaged.

• Tri-State Tornado

It can be named the deadliest tornado in US history. It happened in 1925. The tornado traveled the distance of 352 kilometers in a 3 and a half hours.  Scientists still don’t know whether it was a single tornado or a family of them.

It killed 695 people and destroyed 15,000 homes.
