This goes for riding on the subway too. Try and minimize the amount of hassle and disruption you cause. You’d be amazed at how your smallest actions might end up inconveniencing 100 others within 30 seconds. If riding the subway, learn to swipe your card through the turnstiles quickly, and don’t take up more space than you need when riding the trains.

The first few months of the New Year can be a struggle to say the least and often the only saving grace is the chance to start thinking about summer holidays and planning a trip to the sun. 2011 will demand some strict budgeting and careful savings, so with that in mind here’s five top tips to bagging a bargain summer holiday.

Location, Location, Location

Taking the time to research destination and resort can pay dividends – checking both currency exchange rate and regional costs with regard to eating and drinking can help financial planning for holiday expenses. The frugal traveller may rely on this type of research to source the most economical location.

Shop Around

These days consumer is king and as such there’s a responsibility to shop around for the best offer available. The web is a great place to start, using third party sites for price and package comparison – if you can hold out and are not too fussy about destination or resort it could be worth picking up a last minute deal.

Barter for a Bargain

This doesn’t really apply to online purchases – but if you’re going down the traditional travel agent route then a bit of a barter doesn’t do any harm. Agents are often quite happy to offer a discount, throw additional meals or drinks into the package, or waiver admin fees. The essential rule here is: if you don’t ask you don’t get.

Deferred Payment

If a last minute booking is not doable, then booking way in advance is the other way to potentially bag a bargain. Bookings with deferred payment offer the chance to put down a deposit at point of booking with the balance not due until a couple of months before departure. Alternatively a credit card with good interest rates can be a good option with which you can stage your own monthly payments.

Spending Money

Shopping around is the key here: compare both exchange rates and commission fees. Keeping an eye on conversion rates in advance can also pay well, if there’s a peak in the rate take advantage and get your travel money changed rather than waiting until the week before departure. When using a credit card for withdrawals abroad be aware of charges and rates.

Perhaps most importantly, you will need an international driving permit in order to be able to legally rent a vehicle in Thailand.

This documentation can be applied for through the Post Office, although this can only be done in the three months leading up to when you are due to travel to the country.

It is important that you keep your permit on you at all times while using a car, if you are pulled over for a random police spot-check it is likely that they will ask you to present it them.

You will also find that all reputable car hire companies will require you have an international driving permit in order to rent a car during your holiday in Thailand, while you will also need your passport and a major credit card. In the UK you can legally drive from the age of 17, but in order to hire a car or motorcycle as a tourist in the south-east Asian country you need to be older.

This varies depending on which company you hire from and some may require that you are at least 23.

Providing you meet the above criteria, you should be free to hit the road! There are several similarities to driving in Thailand as there are in the UK, so while getting around may not be too daunting there are some differences you should take into account.

Thai laws require motorists to drive on the left-hand side of the road, just like in the UK. However, this rule is not always followed and you may find instances where road users drive on the opposite side in order to make a turning. You’ll find this is particularly the case in busy cities like Phuket and Bangkok, so make sure you’re aware of what’s going on around you at all times.

Getting from one town to the next should not be too difficult of a task, as major road signs are written in English and Thai. However, you should also make sure that you carry a map and/or sat-nav just in case you run into difficulties as you may find there are fewer signs if you venture off the beaten track.

It is also important to remember that road distances and speed are measured in kilometres, so don’t fall into the mistake of basing your journey on how many miles you need to cover.

While in Thailand you may be tempted to hire a motorcycle or scooter – these are certainly popular vehicles among the locals – and while these can be a quick way to get around, it is important to get one from a reputable company.

You will find a number of beach resorts offer two-wheel vehicles for hire, however these are often unregistered and as such cannot be used legally on public roads. Quad-bikes also cannot be driven on the road.

If you do choose to rent a bike, you should make sure that you wear a helmet. Although this is the law, many locals and tourists choose to ignore this rule. However, you should not fall into making the same error, as you may be fined by the police for doing so.

As is the same in the UK, drivers in Thailand must also wear a seatbelt and while drink-driving rules are also in place, the amount of alcohol you can legally have in your system is lower.

In Thailand, the limit stands at 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood – the equivalent of around one bottle of beer – compared to the 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres rule in the UK. Although it is illegal to drive over the limit, many Thai motorists will often get behind the wheel while under the influence.

Of course, that is not to say you should follow their example and if the police find you guilty of an offence, you could be charged between 200 and 2,000 baht (around £4 to £40).
