Lake Titicaca is a beautiful Lake full of numerous attractions and places to enjoy. But it goes without saying that most tourists love the Islas Flotantes (Uros Floating Islands). Very often people call them The Floating Islands.
These amazing islands have nothing in common to mother nature since they are completely manmade creations. Each island is made from totora reeds which are harvested here on the lake. On such islands live Uros Indians.
According to the official statistic data, currently there are 45 floating islands in the Bay of Puno. The number of islanders varies from island to island. They organize special and breathtaking tours around their island. Unfortunately, it is the only way for them to earn money, that is why it is really difficult to think of such notions as culture and traditions while visiting the island.
Every 6 months the islanders have to lift up all the houses and everything on the island in order to lay down new reeds, otherwise their homes will sink. It is a fantastic feeling to walk there ))) The whole things on islands are made from reeds: houses, boats and even souvenirs. The reeds stand the centre of the Uros peoples’ lives.
