Rats and mice are a lot spoken about animals nowadays. We can “enjoy” them almost everywhere: books, posters, shots, movies and animations devoted solely to them … It seems that there are not enough rats and mice in the world. To my mind that is exactly the idea behind creating the following temple of the rats – Karni Mata.
The temple itself is located in north-western India, and it is a native home to over 20,000 worshipped rats. Now the most interesting part – every year millions of people overcome great distances to pay their respect to these popular rats.
We already know that rats can be knights, cooks and they can be saints as well. Frankly speaking, most of us (I mean western people) think that the following idea is a bit awkward – to worship an animal – let alone a rat.
But eastern people have a bit another point of view. The temple is named Karni Mata – and it is a tribute to the rat goddess with the same name. The temple itself is festively decorated with marble panels, silver and gold embellishments.
The story of Karni Mata is intricate and touching … Karni Mata put a spell on her people: after death they would temporarily inhabit the body of a rat and only afterwards they could become people. That is why rats are treated with respect and love.
