One of the most beautiful roads in the world. Sadly we saw a girl beiing hit bij a falling rock, she died later. Taking a bus is NO guarantee for safety in Taiwan !! I recognised the first road immediately. We took a bus from Coroico to La Paz after completing a trek there (from La Paz) in 1996 it was raining and as a result part of the road collapsed. We were 2nd in a line of buses waiting for the grader (which was coming from the other direction) to gouge out a new section and terrace the slope above. Took four or so hours to get 50m, so the rest of the trip was made in the dark. That was one of the stand out memories of that trip, the trek was brilliant but that small memory is a clear image (or clip) in my brain. There is no doubt of the dangers involved but as i was 12 & travelling with my parents at the time, i thought that mangled cars and trucks at the bottom of a cliff were an awesomely cool spectacle.
