Khersonesus Tauric in Sevastopol

Sevastopol is a city located on the south of Ukraine, it is washed by the Black Sea and belongs to the Autonomic Republic Crimea. This city considered to be a Russian one, because after the USSR dissolution, Sevastopol is still a Russian military port. It is a very romantic city, I saw hundreds of sailors there.

As to a brief history, Sevastopol was founded in 1783 and used to be a base for the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Republic. But in the course of time, it became much bigger and almost changed his orientation, now it can be called, a cultural, trading and recreational center of Ukraine. Sevastopol can be proud of his sightseeing, namely architectural and historical. So, the following places attract attention of tourists and draw millions of them:

  1. Sevastopol Defence in 1854-1855 Monument to Sunk Ships in Sevastopol, UkraineIt is a very interesting sightseeing. First of all, it is a building, that contains the second element – panorama, and the third element – is Panorama’s theme (the 349-day valorous defence of Sevastopol). So, the building was opened on the 14th of May in 1905. Author of the Panorama is F.A. Rubo (a famous battle-painting professor). Panorama itself is a marvelous canvas (1610 square meters) and the canvas is continued with a detailed plan (nearly 900 square meters). But it was ruined and according to the expert impossible to renovate, so 30 artists were drawing it for 3 years. I saw it with my own eyes, it is amazing and stunning, when I saw it for the first time, I was speechless, the illumination is so unbelievable that it seems to I am on the battle-field. The photos are not beautiful at all, because they can’t transfuse the emotions and feeling it provokes in your soul.
  2. Monument to Sunk ShipsThis monument is situated on the quay and can be named the Symbol of Sevastopol. The monument is made to honour the memory of the ships, that sunk while defencing Sevastopol from sea attacks. It was built in 1905. This heroic monument is devoted to a sad period of history. The monument is made in the form of a column with a bronze eagle on the top.
  3. Khersonesus TauricKhersonesus Tauric is a famous historical reservation with a large and heroic history. It was founded in 422-421 BC as a Greek colony, throughout the whole his history Khersonesus Tauric had to participate in wars, finally it was burnt and for many years nobody knows about it, but in 1827 thanks to officer Kruze there began the first excavations. Actually, they are still going on, but some parts of the ancient city are opened to publicity.

Moreover, Sevastopol has marvelous beaches with small creeks, they are perfect places for a holiday.

by Wayne D Stephens
We were house-sitting for my cousin in Coevorden and had the use of their car. We drove all over The Netherlands. There is a parking lot at the entrance to the village. Just park and walk in. It's well worth the trip.
