Situated in Brentwood Bay (that is approximately 20 km north of Victoria), Butchart Gardens are fifty acres of amazing, beautiful views. Even if you will hardly know a tulip from a rose, you’ll have something to see.

Story of Butchart Gardens

To tell the truth, gardens are named so after their inventors and founders – the Butcharts family. Robert and Jennie Butchart came to the West Coast of Canada because of business affairs – Robert was interested in cement production (there were great deposits of limestone). He opened his own factory and in 1904 Mrs. Butchart start working on the gardens. The factory finished its work in 12 years but for more than 20 years it was producing flowerpots and tiles. In 1905 the Butcharts together with a Japanese designer made a Japanese garden. In 1929 – an Italian garden was developed. Since 1920s, Butchart Gardens are a famous tourist attraction, more than 1 million of people come there each year. The Butcharts called their estate “Benvenuto” (“welcome from Italian”). Now, this residence includes: a salt-water swimming pool, a bowling alley, a special billiard room with a self-playing pipe organ (a really incredible one!), a restaurant.
